Finding the right kind of help — and telling them apart

4 min read · Reviewed 2026

Solicitor, mediator, therapist, coach, adviser. Who does what, and who to see first.

People often spend money on the wrong professional at the wrong time, simply because nobody explained the difference.

Solicitor

Advises you on your legal position and can act for you. Regulated. Best when you need to know your rights, or when agreement is not happening.

Mediator

Neutral. Helps you both reach an agreement rather than advising either of you. Often required to be considered before court in England and Wales, though there are exemptions, including for domestic abuse.

Therapist or counsellor

For the emotional weight. Not the same as a coach, and not a substitute for legal advice. Look for BACP or UKCP registration.

Divorce coach

Practical and emotional support through the process. Unregulated as a title, so ask about training and experience.

Financial adviser

For pensions, settlements and what a decision means in ten years' time. Check they are FCA authorised. Some specialise in divorce.
