Getting your money clear when everything feels uncertain

4 min read · Reviewed 2026

How to build a simple picture of your finances in an afternoon, so decisions stop feeling like guesswork.

Money fear grows in the dark. Even a rough picture, written down, tends to be less frightening than the version in your head at three in the morning.

Start with one month

What comes in, and what must go out — rent or mortgage, energy, food, travel, childcare, debt payments. One month is enough to see whether the gap is real or imagined.

Then list what exists

  • Accounts in your name, joint accounts, savings.
  • Pensions — including old ones from previous jobs.
  • Property, vehicles, and anything with a loan against it.
  • Debts: cards, loans, arrears, anything with interest.

Know where free help lives

Citizens Advice and MoneyHelper give free, independent guidance in the UK, including on benefits you may not know you can claim. Getting that check done early is one of the most practical things you can do.

A note on pensions

Pensions are often the second largest asset after a home, and they are frequently overlooked. Whatever you decide, decide it knowingly rather than by accident. A qualified adviser or solicitor can explain how they are usually treated.
