One step at a time: what to do on the days you cannot think

2 min read · Reviewed 2026

A short piece for the days when the whole thing feels too big to look at.

Some days the honest answer is that you cannot plan anything. That is not weakness and it is not a setback. It is what happens when a person carries too much for too long.

On those days, the goal is not progress. It is not going backwards.

Three things that are always enough

  • Eat something and drink water.
  • Tell one person you are having a hard day.
  • Write down the one thing that must happen this week, and nothing else.

Tomorrow you can take the next clear step. Today, staying steady is the step.
